Field Trip to WRMI

WRMI, Radio Miami International, is a commercial international shortwave radio station with studios in Miami, Florida and studios and transmitters in Okeechobee, Florida, broadcasting to listeners worldwide. There is a huge array of antennas and an impressive transmitting facility.

We have arranged to get a tour of their facilities on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 3:00 PM.

We will carpool leaving at 1:00 PM from the parking lot for the Palm Beach County Human Resources building just south of the Palm Beach Airport Hilton. The address of the Hilton is 150 Australian Ave, West Palm Beach, FL 33406. That is near the intersection of I-95 and Southern Blvd.

To find the parking lot, take the entrance road for the Hilton off Australian Ave, go past the Hilton until the road takes a sharp right turn. The parking lot is right at that sharp turn on the left.

It's probably a good idea to bring a 2 Meter radio with you to communicate with other cars going to WRMI. We will use the 146.55 Mhz simplex frequency.

We expect it will take between 1.5 and 2 hours to get to the radio station and the tour will probably be about an hour in length.

If you are interested in going, please send an email to Steve Ikler KS3K at ks3k@arrl.net. In the email indicate your name, callsign and anyone else traveling with you. If you can drive to Okeechobee, please let Steve know how many passengers you can take. If you can't drive, let him know that too. If you have a GPS, that would be useful.

Directions to WRMI

We will leave at 1 pm & connect to I-95 north to Blue Heron. West on Blue Heron to beeline (710). Then west on beeline to Okeechobee city, around 65 mi. Right turn at 441 intersection going north. Just before 240th St. there is a small brown sign indicating the way to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, which is down the road from WRMI on 240th St. 240th St is one mile north of state Road 68 intersection. Turn left, going west, on 240th St. The station is approximately 6 or 7 miles west. Turn left on entrance road going to building.
